How I Actually Use AI

AI helped me find stove-knob covers after two propane scares

From AI helped me protect our dogs, repair our internet, and stop babysitting files

The first time we came home to a faint odor of propane, one of the stove knobs had been turned just a little bit. We vented the house, freaked out a little, and tried to figure out what had happened. Maybe one of the dogs bumped it. Maybe one of us did before we left. We really didn't know.

Nothing happened again for months, so eventually we stopped thinking about it. Then the other day we came home, opened the door, and got smacked in the face with the smell of propane.

We got everybody outside and vented the house. When we turned the stove off, there was a little poof of flame as it hit the igniter. That freaked us both out pretty hard.

We leave the dogs out whenever we leave the house. They're usually very well behaved. Every once in a while we'll come home to something chewed up or moved around, but for the most part they're really good dogs.

Now this had happened twice. The animals had been in there breathing it, and any number of things could have gone wrong. I didn't really care anymore about figuring out exactly how the knob got turned. I wanted to make sure it couldn't happen the same way again.

So I picked up my phone and asked AI. The dogs have apparently bumped the knobs. This is the second time. What options do I have?

It suggested childproof stove-knob covers. Turns out this is a thing. It also suggested taking the knobs off temporarily until we could get covers on them.

Well, is this available at Walmart? Because we had to get our grocery order in the next day.

It searched for options, and then we checked the local listing ourselves. Sure enough, our Walmart had them in stock. We added them to the grocery order, they were delivered, and we put them on the stove.

They work beautifully. The knobs are covered now and protected from the accidental bumps we were worried about.

The other useful suggestion was something I hadn't been thinking about at all: a gas detector. I was focused on stopping the knobs from turning. A detector would give us another layer if prevention ever failed.

We want one that can connect to the smart home, so that's next. For now, the covers are on, the knobs are protected, and I feel a whole lot better leaving the dogs at home.
