How I Actually Use AI

I saved about $400 by dyeing my towels instead of replacing them

From Towels, a Roomba, dinner, and translation

Our towels were faded, but they were still good towels. Replacing all of them would have cost about $400, which seemed like a lot of money to solve a color problem. I photographed them, showed ChatGPT the colors I was considering, weighed the actual batches, and used test cloths before committing the towels. It helped calculate dye amounts, recalculate when the plan changed, and work out how to reuse dye baths. I corrected it when something did not match what I was doing, and Jason still had veto power over the final colors.

The towels came out well, we kept them, and I did not spend $400 replacing something that was otherwise fine. This was one of those projects where the mundane details—the weight of a wet-looking pile of towels, the test fabric, the second batch—were the whole reason a conversation worked better than a generic dye guide.
